Left Behind 2022

When Movement Speaks Louder Than Words
Left Behind 2022

About

In 2022 No Strings took part in Kayah Guenther’s new creative development ‘Tall Man’, with funding from Australia Council for the Arts. The ‘Tall Man’ project consisted of three 20-min solos, of which Paulo Castro directed one, named Left Behind. “Tall Man” premiered at the Home of the Arts (HOTA) in the Gold Coast on 1st September 2022.

The development was a trilogy of work. The first two solos were My Ugly Voice directed by Philip Channells in Collaboration with Alec Baker and ‘Heart of an Alp directed by Timothy Ohl. Kayah Guenther is a performer who works in dance, theatre, and film. Residing in regional New South Wales, Kayah has a wide range of experience working with HOTA, Ausdance NSW and Create NSW.

Dance is his passion. It gives him a form of expression that transcends verbal communication. Kayah says, “People sometimes don’t listen to my voice but they listen to my dance,” and “I need to think really hard when I speak, but I can move really easy when I dance.” After development and rehearsals with Kayah, Left Behind developed into a dance piece where the solo character was left behind by society, needing to survive alone in solitude, while still holding hope for a
brighter tomorrow in society.
