About Paulo Castro – Artistic Director

Artistic Director

No Strings Theatre Of Disability has been in my heart since I first connected with the company in 2007. What began as a collaboration on Tom the Loneliest with the amazing Duncan Luke and Julian Crotti has evolved into a 17-year journey of creating fearless, limitless, boundless theatre that challenges expectations and transforms perceptions.

In 2022 I was invited by No Strings CEO Kari Seeley to join the Artistic Leadership Collective and I didn’t hesitate for a moment. It was easy to say ‘yes’ because No Strings Attached Theatre of Disability has been in my heart since the very first time I connected with them, back in 2007.

As Artistic Director since 2023, my commitment is clear: giving visibility to our performers and amplifying the voices of those who live with disability. Through productions like Tom the Loneliest, Steak and Chelsea, MY WAR (in collaboration with State Theatre Company South Australia), and the internationally acclaimed My Stories Matter film trilogy, we’ve consistently delivered artistic outcomes that exceed expectations.

Great theatre is about telling challenging, provocative stories in unexpected ways. No Strings is a professional theatre company where we take our craft and our performers seriously. We create meaningful paid employment opportunities in the arts industry because our performers are the heart of everything we do – without them, there would be no No Strings.

My focus as Artistic Director is building on our brilliant 30-year legacy while continuing to integrate our performers into society through the transformative power of professional theatre. We don’t try to please everyone – we create art that matters, stories that challenge, and performances that resonate with authenticity and excellence.

Above all, we will always produce ART with HEART.
