About
A mysterious room. Is it a sanctuary? An asylum? A prison? … although the clock isn’t ticking, time is running out!
No Strings Attached Theatre Of Disability, supported by the Richard Llewellyn Deaf and Disability Project Grant through CreateSA, presents THE CONSTRUCT, a world premiere production that explores the complex landscape of mental illness with unflinching honesty and artistic precision. This professional theatre work challenges perceptions and transforms how we understand the lived experience of schizophrenia and psychosis.
THE CONSTRUCT follows one person’s journey through a mysterious room that could be sanctuary, asylum, or prison. Through fearless, professional storytelling, the production examines the isolation created by mental illness – isolation built by individuals desperate to conceal their truth, by a society eager to maintain an illusion of safety, and by a mind grappling with a reality that seems just beyond reach.
This bold theatrical work, written by JW Smith and directed by Catherine Purling, features the exceptional performance of Fig Kershaw. Under expert lighting design by Nic Mollison and innovative set design by Stewart Boag and Casey Van Sebille (from AC Arts), THE CONSTRUCT creates an immersive theatrical experience that brings visibility to conditions too often hidden in shadows. The production echoes works like A Beautiful Mind and the writings of Kafka or Murakami, inviting audiences to understand that reality and construct intertwine in the mind wrestling with psychosis.
Experience extraordinary professional theatre that gives voice to those rarely heard. THE CONSTRUCT showcases the artistic abilities of D/deaf and disabled performers, creating a powerful performance that resonates with authentic lived experience and challenges assumptions about mental illness and capability.
